Histopthological Study on The Senile Brain

Abstract
The histopathological study on the senile brain were carried out with 32cases over 60years old in age.
The tissue blocks were obtained from 11 areas of frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital lobe, central gyrus, hippocampal area, midbrain, diencephalon, pons, cerebellum and medulla oblongata. Each block was prepared for H-E staining, Nissl staining and Bielschowsky staining.
The four characteristic senile changes of the brain; senile plaque, Alzheimer¢¥s change, granular change and torpedo were the object of this investigation.
The senile plaque was found in 87.5% of all cases. This change was more predominant in hippocampus and cerebral cortex. No senile plaque was found in midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata.
Alzheimer¢¥s change was found in 50.0% of all cases, mainly in hippocampus, rarely frontal, temporal, parietal lobe and central gyrus.
The granular change was found in 39. 1%, predominantly in hippocampus.
Torpedo was found in 87.5%, in granular layer of cerebellar cortex and area of Purkinjie cell. Above four changes were more dominant under influence of disease of CNS and the advanced age.
